The Woman In White Musical
By Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber (composer), and David Zippel (Lyricist)
Writing Credits: Wilkie Collins (Plot), and Charlotte Jones (Book)
The Woman In White is perhaps the first true Victorian mystery novel. Written by Wilkie Collins it was first published in 1860.
Originally it appeared as a serial in 'All The Year Round' a magazine published by fellow author, and friend to Collins, Charles Dickens.
Very soon the story was produced as an unauthorised play, and 'The Woman In White' was so popular that bonnets and other haberdashery, as well as cosmetics were 'branded', with no benefit to Collins, by London entrepreneurs!
In 2002 Lord Lloyd Webber read the book and considered it suitable for musical adaptation. The London production of the musical opened in August, 2004 at The Palace Theatre, where it continues to run. The New York Production opened in November 2005 staring many of the original London cast. notably Maria Friedman who bravely took to the stage just two weeks following an operation for breast cancer.
The music is wonderful, but Wilkie Collins book is also complex and perhaps more ideally suited to dramatic serialisation, than the musical stage?
